Can Hypnosis be dangerous?
Generally hypnosis is considered a pretty safe practice especially since the average person will go into trance several times a day. However, if you have a psychiatric diagnosis you should let your hypnotist know as well as let your providers be aware that you may wish to engage in hypnotherapy.
Self hypnosis is generally safe, unless you have psychiatric conditions. You may need to be careful of engaging in self hypnosis as you could cause things to become worse… examples that can easily become worse in self-hypnosis are anxiety and depression. I know of some of the dangers as that happened to me before I was fully trained. I had horrible depression and anxiety and I was actually (as far as my providers were concerned) encouraging my body to literally shut itself down which included having and internal organ rupture itself because of things I accidentally did. At the time I knew just enough to be dangerous and had no idea I was programming myself for destruction. My poor hypnotherapist had to find out what I was doing, put a block on my accidental self hypnosis, reprogram what I was doing and then fix what I did to myself on top of the things I was already paying him to fix. Poor man.
In addition, unethical hypnotherapists can create multiple personalities under hypnosis. However, most hypnotherapists are ethical enough not even consider doing that. Most hypnotherapists are good people and would not even consider doing such a thing.
However most things that you would be coming to a hypnotist for (smoking, weight loss, etc) are pretty safe.
