The Demographics of Certifed v Uncertified hypnotherapists

This study examined the differences demographics in unlicensed and licensed hypnosis practitioners. Analyzing the current state of the hypnosis field is integral to forecasting the future development of the field, improve diversity of the field, and potentially increase student participation.

The survey link was distributed through 16 sources including professional organizations, hypnosis certifying organizations, private mailing lists, groups, and in some cases individuals. The participants ranged from young adults (18-24) to 85+. Licensed providers were more likely to report slightly higher ages, more education, full time employment, and were less likely to report identifying as LGBT, having a disability, being female, less likely to be self-employed, and reported lower hours of hypnosis specific training than their unlicensed counterparts. Additional information regarding hypnosis practitioners in the United States is also provided.

Limitations of this study include potential sampling biases and reduced demographic collection due to European privacy laws.
